3M, the maker of Post-it® Notes™, recently released a widget (Post-it® Notes™ Shopping Genius) in what looks like a marketing campaign for their Post-it® Notes™ product. The widget turns the classic Post-it® Notes™ into a digital format and transforms the ever useful shopping list into a smart tool. The widget allows you to search for products and add them to a shopping list. As prices and inventory changes, the widget will update the list so you don’t have to. Overall, this seemed like a good marketing tool for their campaign.

We grabbed the iGoogle version of the widget, played around a bit and dug a little deeper. We did not look at the Windows Vista, Windows 7 nor Mac OS X versions. At first glance it looks straight forward.

However, one thing stuck out immediately. Everything is in GBP, £. There is no apparent way to set your location or country. We’re in the US so that’s a problem for us. For those of you in the UK, it won’t be an issue. Looking at the results of the merchants, it looks like they are also based primarily out of the UK.

If you are able to get past the localization issue and use the widget, it’s not too bad. Search for products, add them and watch it update. We don’t know the details of the engine that drives the pricing and inventory updates so we can’t comment on how effective the tool is. You will have to test it out yourself.

As part of the campaign, Post-it® is running a monthly drawing for £1,000 or the value of your shopping list, so it maybe worth trying out yourself for a few week. See their site for more details.

Post-it® Brand launches Shopping Genius widget

Post-it ® Brand releases an innovative digital application that acts as a customisable shopping list on your computer.

Have you ever seen a great gadget or product that is a little pricier than you want it to be? Everyone knows that products come down in price, but keeping an eye out for the perfect deal is time-consuming and difficult. Bargains are better when you have to do less hunting.

Inspired by usage of the classic Post-it® Note as a shopping list, 3M have developed an evolution of the shopping list for the digital age. Post®-it Shopping Genius sits on your computer desktop, keeping an eye on the price changes for you, locating the cheapest price, and letting you know when it changes. This customisable application enables you to choose from thousands of electricals, durables and other consumer goods, and track up to 5 at a time.

The application, which can be directly downloaded from http://bit.ly/Post-itGenius is available on iGoogle, Mac OS X desktop and Windows 7 / Vista desktops. It displays up-to-date prices on many thousands of products, which are searchable within the tool.

If that weren’t reason enough to use the application, 3M is also offering a monthly prize draw of £1,000 or the value of your shopping list if less as an incentive to those who refer the Shopping Genius application to a friend. That’s £1,000 to help fund your list of dream items or to spend as you please. The first winner will be drawn on 1st August, 2010.
